A Claude Code user found a status-line feature eating 16% of their spend, with no setting to turn it off

A developer published measurements on 29th Oct'26 showing that Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, sends each background agent's full transcript to the model roughly every 30 seconds to write a three-to-five-word status line in the agents panel. In their own telemetry over a week, this summary accounted for 16.4% of spend and 19.7% of API requests, slightly more than the main conversation, with 96% of it on Opus. The feature has been on by default since version 2.1.232 in August, and the developer found no setting that switches it off without also disabling background agents; a GitHub issue they cite collects reports of 18% to 26%. These are one user's figures, and we found no response from Anthropic.
What it actually means
Teams running coding agents in the background tend to watch the cost of the work they asked for, and rarely what the tool spends on itself. Here a label in the interface cost more than the conversation it described, because a full transcript was resent every half minute to produce a few words of output, and that overhead grows with every agent left running. You do not need this user's workaround to act on it. Claude Code can export usage to OpenTelemetry, so break your spend down by request type for a week and see what share goes on things nobody reads. If the number is close to theirs, run fewer background agents at once and end them once their job is done, and apply the same check to any agent tool you pay for by the token.
Measure what your agent tools spend on themselves, not only on the work you asked for.
