Walmart opened its store to AI shopping agents, with a spending limit the customer sets
On 21st Oct'26, Walmart's chief executive John Furner announced Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search Walmart's online inventory and buy for a customer on Walmart and Sam's Club. From next month, Agent Profiles will give each agent its own space in the customer's account, where the customer either approves every purchase or sets a spending limit for automatic approval. Agents cannot see payment details, get only the information a task needs, and are blocked if they break Walmart's terms. Amazon has gone the other way and started blocking AI agents from buying on its site.
What it actually means
The obvious read is Walmart against Amazon, but the part worth studying if you build agents is the design. Walmart has answered the question most agent projects put off, which is how much an agent can do without asking, by giving each agent its own profile with a limit the customer sets and keeping the card out of its reach. Any agent you let near money or customer records needs the same controls, and now there is a large public version to copy.
If you sell online, it also changes who reads your shop. An agent choosing between two retailers compares product feeds rather than homepages, and with Amazon shutting agents out, some of that shopping will go wherever agents are let in. The thing to check this quarter is whether your product data is clean enough for a machine to compare.
Every agent you let near money needs what Walmart just built: its own profile and a limit the customer sets.
