Free Gemini users drop to Google's smallest model from 9th Oct
Google's Gemini help pages say that from 9th Oct'26, people using the Gemini app on a personal account without a subscription will only have Flash-Lite, its lightest model, and lose Flash and Pro. AI Plus subscribers keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro on a date Google will email to each of them, while AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three and AI Pro gains Deep Think. The change covers the Gemini app on personal accounts.
What it actually means
Plenty of teams run real work through someone's free Gemini login, from drafting briefs to summarising contracts, and many of those informal workflows were built and tested on Flash or Pro. From Friday the same prompts run on a smaller model, so the output will drift, and people tend to blame the prompt before they notice the model changed underneath it.
Use this as the moment to list which of your team's workflows depend on a personal AI account, free or paid. Any that matter should move to a work account where you know which model you are getting, or to the API, where you choose the model by name and it does not change without notice.
If the work matters, don't run it on a model you can't name.
