OpenAI and Anthropic cut prices ten days after calling for a slowdown
On 22nd Sep'26, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 with an API price cut of roughly 40% and no five-hour usage cap, the limit that throttled heavy users of the previous model. Within minutes, OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, cutting its own API prices by around 50%. WCCFTech reported that Luna, the smaller of the two, now prices below DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash, a leading Chinese open-weight model. Both releases land ten days after Anthropic's Dario Amodei and other lab leaders publicly called for the industry to slow its pace of development.
What it actually means
The slowdown call did not survive ten days of competition. Both labs shipped their next models anyway and led with the number a builder actually watches, which is price. Public statements about pacing the frontier and the actual release calendar are decided separately inside these companies, whatever the framing on the day.
