One in ten people now get their news from AI — and almost none click through

The Reuters Institute's 2026 Digital News Report is being read as a journalism story. For anyone building with AI it's something more useful: a map of how discovery itself is moving to the AI layer — and what that means for getting your work found.
What it actually means
This looks like a journalism story. It isn't — it's a discovery story, and it's about anyone building a product, a brand or a body of work. AI is becoming the layer people meet your work through, and it keeps the visit: only 4% click past a chatbot's answer to the source, while OpenAI's crawlers pull hundreds of pages for every referral they return. The old game — optimise to get clicked — is closing. The new one is optimise to get cited: make your work legible to the machines doing the summarising, and make it the kind of thing they can't reproduce. The moat is first-hand, built-it-yourself work, not another summary of someone else's.
Stop optimising to be clicked. Start optimising to be cited.
